Howl's Moving Castle

Just watched Howl's Moving Castle (first time) last night. Most awesome thing about the movie? That there's a person in a wheelchair without ONE GODDAM WORD of explanation, or even mention. This character just happens to be in a wheelchair. Which is not important to who the person is, or what motivates her, in any way, and so is just not mentioned and expected to be accepted.

why would an explanation be a bad thing? or is it just neat that there is no explanation without that necessarily meaning that one would've been "bad"?

Having an explanation tends to reduce the character's identity to the disability itself. Not having an explanation gives us the opportunity to see a person with a disability as an individual who happens to have an uncommon characteristic, without overloading everything the character does with considerations that are, ultimately, extraneous.
