adalger: Earthrise as seen from the moon, captured on camera by the crew of Apollo 16 (Default)

Standing alone in the center of the dark,
Shouting just to force a reprieve from the silence,
I listen to the echoes of my half-mad bark
And cringe at the warping of my fear into violence.
Something is out there, feeding on my terror,
Tearing at my soul, and it laughs at my defiance.
I shouldn't be here. This is all an error.
This is just a nightmare. This is not reality.
Heart beating wildly, can I stand the scare, or
Will I find the truth behind the dreaming world's causality?
Will I be another inexplicable fatality?

My heart, my soul, placed tender in your hands,
The greatest treasure I could offer you,
You held so close. You made no vain demands,

No royal edicts. That we'd see it through
I had no doubt, that love would sure suffice
Against the hostile world. I never knew

My heart, so hardly used, would turn to ice
When you turned cold, my soul would burn with fire,
Like leaves all dead and tinder-dry. Now twice

My soul has burned for you: with hot desire
When first you came to me, the molten heat
Of passion coursing, trite angelic choir

As chorus keeping time to my heart's beat;
Continuously since you walked away,
Each moment filled with pain, despair, defeat,

A nova-star that overshadows day
Ablaze within my chest, and here to stay.

ETA: I left off the first line when I posted this, and just noticed a day later.

What's done is done; what's broken is no more.
What's gone beneath the bridge you can't regain.
What's taken has been locked behind the door

Of Never, to be never seen again.
As well to wish it somehow to return
As to expect an upward-falling rain,

Or to expect a candle to unburn.
The mark of history upon the soul
Is permanent, as what you from it learn.

In shattered pieces, what was once a whole
Will always after be some scattered bits
Of memory and pain. The final toll,

Once paid, is paid, and there the ferry sits,
And having crossed, the journey-taker quits.

Parading silent through the trees,
The elves progress in single file
And let their hair blow in the breeze.
They walk in quiet for a while,
And other times they walk along
And play and sing and laugh and smile.
They sing their joyful forest-song
To all the creatures of the wood,
To all the things that there belong.
They find in each some life, some good,
For even in what feeds on death
Is beauty to be understood.
They sing in love, and every breath
Gives praise to fairest Elbereth.

The darkness falls, and with it come the dreams
That whisper at my soul, that claw my heart.
The world at night is not the world it seems
When sun shines out upon the morning's start
So brightly, when the hope of dawning day
Obscures despair at being torn apart
From all that matters to me. "Come what may,"
The morning says, "together we'll get by."
But dawn knows not what evening's trials say.
The ill-concealed truth, the blatant lie,
The artful half-suggested hint, they all
Stack up like bricks to scrape the midnight sky
And keep me, fearful, hid behind my wall.
But like a house of cards, one day they'll fall.
