Midnight's Seeming

The darkness falls, and with it come the dreams
That whisper at my soul, that claw my heart.
The world at night is not the world it seems
When sun shines out upon the morning's start
So brightly, when the hope of dawning day
Obscures despair at being torn apart
From all that matters to me. "Come what may,"
The morning says, "together we'll get by."
But dawn knows not what evening's trials say.
The ill-concealed truth, the blatant lie,
The artful half-suggested hint, they all
Stack up like bricks to scrape the midnight sky
And keep me, fearful, hid behind my wall.
But like a house of cards, one day they'll fall.
