Accidental Jewel

Glistening like sap upon the trunk of the ancient tree,
The memory of what has been denies me what might be.
It glitters golden in the sun, the call of long ago,
To tempt me there to spend my days, entrapped in its amber flow;
Engulfs me in the pale morass of yesterdays long past
To keep me rooted, cased around, and smothered at the last
In hard and shining crystal, motionless and on display,
Another unsuspecting bug entombed in a common way.
