adalger: Earthrise as seen from the moon, captured on camera by the crew of Apollo 16 (Default)

You are written in a language
   I don't recognize.
Though you fill my life with music,
   I can't harmonize.
All the depth of all the ocean,
All the grace of Heaven's motion,
You possess, but I've no notion,
For your brightest shining barely
   Penetrates my eyes.

I am crudely sketched in pencil,
   Faded with the years.
I am scribbled in the margin,
   Blurred by private tears.
I have joy, and love, and passion,
I have beauty in my fashion,
But I've drawn a shorter ration
Of the means to bring them out from
   Underneath my fears.

I am locked within my prison.
   Will you set me free?
I am lost, confused, and frightened.
   Will you comfort me?
I am here, but I need tending.
I need help, and time for mending.
If you have the strength for lending,
Hold me close and say you love the
   Person I can be.

Swirling leaves, in myriad hues,
Skitter along on the tattered ground.
I try to watch them, hungry for clues
To their meaning; confusion is all I've found.
Fiery crimson, orange, and yellow,
They leap before me in bonfire blaze.
Their collective rustling infernal bellow
Fills my ears as I wander their maze.
In circles, in spirals, like ember-sparks flying,
Upward they carry my dreams to the sky,
To arrive, merely ashes, the hope they took dying.
To extinguish the burning, I sit down and cry.

There goes my phone again,
Ringing ... ringing ...
A message from my pain,
Stinging ... stinging ...
"How am I doing? I'm okay -- I'm doing fine.
Glad your life is happy, don't concern yourself with mine."
I lie here all alone,
Bleeding ... bleeding ...
I'm longing for your touch,
Needing ... needing ...
I hold the knife you left me, recognize the blade.
I used it once -- sometimes I think I should have stayed
Where someone knew my game
Lying ... lying ...
Now no one knows my name
Dying .. dying ...
Here on the floor so cold I'm finally alone.
I feel my fingertips start slipping on the phone.
There goes my phone again,
Ringing ... ringing ...
A message from my pain
Stinging ... stinging ...

Within the silence, barely heard,
A voice trills out a merry song.
What splendor is this lovely bird
That draws my soul to sing along?

A voice trills out: a merry song
Of joy and laughter fills the air.
That draws my soul. My sing-along,
That joins me to comfort there

Of joy and laughter, fills the air.
What splendor! Is this lovely bird
That joins me, to the comfort there
Within, the silence barely heard?

The knight with his lance, the hero with his sword,
They slay the dragon once, they claim their reward.
But the serpent still survives,
And extinguishes their lives,
And he broods o'er the maiden as he sits upon his hoard.

She is beautiful, alluring, she's the damsel in distress.
In the prison with the dragon, she abides with tattered dress,
So abandoned, so alone,
'Neath the wyrm upon his throne,
She is haunted by her captivation with his ugliness.

At intervals a savior comes and saves her from the beast.
He takes her in, protects her, he lays her out a feast.
But, addicted to her pain,
She makes him what he's slain,
And dragon stands anew where fallen knight now lies, deceased.

There's a little arbor
Deep within the forest.
There is my safe harbor.

When my heart is sorest,
Then I seek salvation
Deep within the forest.

When in my frustration
I have lost my tether,
Then I seek salvation

Sheltered from the weather
In the place you found me.
I have lost my tether.

Pain and anger hound me,
Yet there's peace and gladness
In the place you found me.

Far from fear and madness,
There's a little arbor
Where I know no sadness.
There is my safe harbor.

The darkness falls, and with it come the dreams
That whisper at my soul, that claw my heart.
The world at night is not the world it seems
When sun shines out upon the morning's start
So brightly, when the hope of dawning day
Obscures despair at being torn apart
From all that matters to me. "Come what may,"
The morning says, "together we'll get by."
But dawn knows not what evening's trials say.
The ill-concealed truth, the blatant lie,
The artful half-suggested hint, they all
Stack up like bricks to scrape the midnight sky
And keep me, fearful, hid behind my wall.
But like a house of cards, one day they'll fall.

Step lightly, little one. Walk with care,
For you never know what is lurking there
Between the border of day and dark
In the horrible, terrible Monster Park.

Hideous, ugly beasts at play
Sleep in the night and hide in the day,
But after the light and before full dark,
The monsters play in the Monster Park.

Sometimes you can hear them growl,
Hear them scream and hear them howl,
When day is done and it's not yet dark.
Best stay away from the Monster Park!

For if you happen to stray inside,
You'll find them playing and riding rides,
And from sunset until the fall of dark,
You'll be pushing the swings at the Monster Park.

The rabbits in the warren run and bustle to and fro.
They eat the grass and clover and that's everything they know.
The rabbits in the warren see the rabbits in the hutch.
They see the cage, and think they wouldn't like it very much.
The rabbits in the warren fill whatever space they've got.
They're free, and some are free to starve, and some of them will not.
The rabbits in the hutch, they think they've got it pretty good.
They're clean and dry and fed and sheltered in their house of wood.
The rabbits in the hutch, they see the rabbits running free,
And mostly they are thinking, "Lord, I'm glad that isn't me."
The rabbits in the hutch are cared for, never knowing why,
Never caring where it comes from 'til the day they die.
The rabbits in the warren want to free their 'prisoned kin;
The rabbits in the hutch would love to let their brothers in.
But rabbit talks to rabbit and they're always poles apart,
And rabbits -- rabbits never find they've got a lion's heart.

I plod along, THUMP THUMP, beside the streets of life.
Here a mother walks with her child, there a man with his wife.
They laugh and stride, the groom and bride,
The child skips and sings,
And I hear the song as I plod along,
And envy the lively things.

I shuffle by, THUMP THUMP, as life goes on around.
The lively ones, they work and play, all full of color and sound.
They walk and run, and one by one,
They get to where they head,
And lonely I, I shuffle by,
And can hardly be told from dead.

I slowly limp, THUMP THUMP, amid the gutter's grime.
None of them pay attention to me. They haven't got the time.
They have their lives, their kids, their wives,
Their jobs and homes and all,
And I, the gimp, I slowly limp
Until at last I fall.

Forge onward, brave, against despair
When cruel destiny awaits,
And at the end you'll find me there.

The prize is rich for those who dare
To pit their strength against their fates.
Forge onward, brave, against despair

To hold the hand of human care.
Hold fast until the pain abates,
And at the end you'll find me there.

In darkness when you know not where
The path leads safely to the gates,
Forge onward, brave, against despair.

Oh, sailor, well I wish you fare
Among those narrow rocky straits,
And at the end you'll find me there.

When heart is heavy, soul laid bare,
And nowhere can you see your mates,
Forge onward, brave, against despair
And at the end you'll find me there.
