I have shamelessly stolenlovingly emulated the rhyme and meter of Tennyson's "The Lady of Shallot."

And it is (comparatively) long. )

Let us join with one another on that long and winding road.
From the valley to the valley o'er the mountaintops we go.
Should one tire, should one grow weak,
Should one falter as we seek,
Let us each pick up the load. Let us share the strength we know.

Let us walk along together in communion, hand in hand
From the morning to the evening through the brightness of the day.
Should one lag, should one retreat,
Should one wilt beneath the heat,
Let us help our friends to stand. Let us lift them on the way.

Place your arms around me, so:
A shield against the crying cold --
I feel it wait there; I must go

Deep into the piling snow
That covers that once-verdant fold.
Place your arms around me, so

They shelter from the bitter blow
My heart that shivers, shriveled, old,
I feel it. Wait there. I must go

A step alone, for none may know
These secrets listened to and told.
Place your arms around me. So

Defenseless, I must face the foe,
The fear, the frozen faceless -- BOLD
I feel it wait! THERE I must go

NOW and can you help me? NO!
But ... yes, oh Sunlight, warm and gold!
Place your arms around me, so
I FEEL it. Wait. There I must ... go.

I against the darkness, a candle at a time,
Throw my soul into the sky to find the sinking sun.
Soaring spirit brightens, hopes forever climb
As long as I continue with the light that I've begun.

I against the silence, word by clever word,
Cast my mind into the void to seek the cosmic din.
Thoughts and dreams and visions ever will be heard
As long as I continue with the song I now begin.

I against the stillness, by step and leap and bound,
Throw myself into the sport of life, and dance and run.
Peace and strength to fill me everywhere are found
As long as I continue with the life that I've begun.

I gaze once again
At the spark I remember:
My salvation;
My frustration.
It burns like a coal
On the skin of my soul
As I flirt with the pain
Of the ever-glowing ember.

When I see my own reflection,
Shall I say that I don't care?
In the glass of recollection,

Was I pure in my affection?
If I lay my spirit bare
When I see my own reflection,

I could never claim perfection
Seeing true the image there
In the glass of recollection.

In the opposite direction
(Where my ego tends to err
When I see my own reflection),

My humility's objection
Says my pride is hardly fair.
In the glass of recollection,

Automatic incorrection
Makes me wonder how I dare
When I see my own reflection
In the glass of recollection.

Swirling leaves, in myriad hues,
Skitter along on the tattered ground.
I try to watch them, hungry for clues
To their meaning; confusion is all I've found.
Fiery crimson, orange, and yellow,
They leap before me in bonfire blaze.
Their collective rustling infernal bellow
Fills my ears as I wander their maze.
In circles, in spirals, like ember-sparks flying,
Upward they carry my dreams to the sky,
To arrive, merely ashes, the hope they took dying.
To extinguish the burning, I sit down and cry.

Standing alone in the center of the dark,
Shouting just to force a reprieve from the silence,
I listen to the echoes of my half-mad bark
And cringe at the warping of my fear into violence.
Something is out there, feeding on my terror,
Tearing at my soul, and it laughs at my defiance.
I shouldn't be here. This is all an error.
This is just a nightmare. This is not reality.
Heart beating wildly, can I stand the scare, or
Will I find the truth behind the dreaming world's causality?
Will I be another inexplicable fatality?

The lot on the corner, the one all choked with weeds,
Queen Anne's lace and dandelions, scruffy patchy grass,
Was filled with fun and laughter.
Huddled twisted green things dropped their starving seeds
There to lie unnoticed and watch the summer pass,
And fall and winter after.

There in the morgue of foliage, the grave of vegetation,
A pick-up game was always played every summer day.
The game was its own reason.
All day long on most days, 'til school would end vacation,
Then Saturdays until the snow took the field away
And hid it for the season.

Plucking the petals of a daisy
(Slowly! Ever more slowly!)
I don't allow myself to see
How many are left.
Holding in my mind
To the optimistic ignorance of childhood,
I refuse to believe
She might have stolen one
Before she gave it to me.

A pit, a chasm, yawning wide, and deep as once was high
The mountaintop where I proclaimed my love for all to hear,
Engulfs the heart I gave you, where you dropped it, let it lie
In blackness, blank and bottomless, and filled with fatal fear.

A peace of sorts is in the silence, seeming so serene,
Where I can rest from raging, step away from hurt and hate.
No friends can lift me out from here, whatever good they mean.
However many hands are offered, mine must bear the weight.

The daunting walls that line my prison, sharp with spikes of stone,
As hard as once my heart was soft, are merciless and bleak.
The steep ascent to sanity I must endure alone,
For none can join me here to lead me to the path I seek.

The world above, so full of life, awaits my trial's end
To see if I, when all is done, will freely fly once more.
For now I walk, and test the walls; my harrowed wings I mend,
And rest, assured that when the time is here, again I'll soar.

My heart, my soul, placed tender in your hands,
The greatest treasure I could offer you,
You held so close. You made no vain demands,

No royal edicts. That we'd see it through
I had no doubt, that love would sure suffice
Against the hostile world. I never knew

My heart, so hardly used, would turn to ice
When you turned cold, my soul would burn with fire,
Like leaves all dead and tinder-dry. Now twice

My soul has burned for you: with hot desire
When first you came to me, the molten heat
Of passion coursing, trite angelic choir

As chorus keeping time to my heart's beat;
Continuously since you walked away,
Each moment filled with pain, despair, defeat,

A nova-star that overshadows day
Ablaze within my chest, and here to stay.

ETA: I left off the first line when I posted this, and just noticed a day later.

It was early in the morning, or maybe late at night.
I sat alone and wondered if the dawn would ever break.
I huddled in upon myself, waiting for the light.

I never knew the effort, or the work that it would take
To be alive for morning. Could I see it through?
I sat alone and wondered. If the dawn would ever break,

The sun would shine upon the world and make it bright and new.
My soul, so heavy in the dark, would lift and leap once more
To be alive. For morning, could I see it through,

Would come, with singing birds for ushers, knocking on my door.
Let go would be the burden, the ebon box I held
My soul so heavy in. The dark would lift, and leap once more

My sprit would, when night was done, and moon and stars dispelled.
The night would pass, the day would come, the dawn was on its way.
Let go would be the burden: the ebon box. I held.

I'll never tell the things I did to keep the dark at bay.
It was early in the morning, or maybe late at night,
And what goes on within a man, he shouldn't have to say.
I huddled in upon myself, waiting for the light.

There goes my phone again,
Ringing ... ringing ...
A message from my pain,
Stinging ... stinging ...
"How am I doing? I'm okay -- I'm doing fine.
Glad your life is happy, don't concern yourself with mine."
I lie here all alone,
Bleeding ... bleeding ...
I'm longing for your touch,
Needing ... needing ...
I hold the knife you left me, recognize the blade.
I used it once -- sometimes I think I should have stayed
Where someone knew my game
Lying ... lying ...
Now no one knows my name
Dying .. dying ...
Here on the floor so cold I'm finally alone.
I feel my fingertips start slipping on the phone.
There goes my phone again,
Ringing ... ringing ...
A message from my pain
Stinging ... stinging ...

Tucked away in a pocket of the city
Like a frog brought home from down by the creek,
The cabins are hidden by towering foliage.
Sometimes I'd go there for a day or a week.
I'd go there and grow there with life all around me,
Flowers and trees, and boys and young men.
Animals roamed there, mostly unbothered,
Peaceful and natural. That was back when.
Back when my troubles were simple and solvable,
Back when I knew who I was, knew my friends,
Back in the pocket of love called a family,
Back when I didn't know childhood ends.
There in the cabin, a hope still is hidden,
Happiness lodged in a crack in the floor
Under the floorboards, never discoverd,
There to be found when I need it once more.
I and my childhood friends put it in there,
Stored for the day when we all could come back,
Pass it around, look it over, and share it,
Pirates returned to plunder that crack.

Bobbing about in the turbulent river,
Tossed like a twig by the white-foaming spray,
Vainly I hope it will safely deliver
Shoreward my body, and hopelessly pray.

Beaten on boulders that jut like incisors
Out from the gum line of riverbed mud,
Threaten to rend me, demonic divisors
Mocking my effort to weather the flood,

Battered and crushed, I surrender and, floating,
Somehow avoid going under to drown.
Bruised but not broken, I sit here -- still gloating:
River, you choked, couldn't swallow me down!

Clackety-clack
Along the track,
The cars go rolling by.
The engine's force,
The fixed rail-course
Are fates they can't deny.

They roll. They rock.
The routes they block
Are never their own fault,
Nor any ill
From crash to spill
To long unscheduled halt.

The engineer
Has duties clear,
The track a path defined.
Passengers -- they
Have got no say,
And make no never-mind.

Within the silence, barely heard,
A voice trills out a merry song.
What splendor is this lovely bird
That draws my soul to sing along?

A voice trills out: a merry song
Of joy and laughter fills the air.
That draws my soul. My sing-along,
That joins me to comfort there

Of joy and laughter, fills the air.
What splendor! Is this lovely bird
That joins me, to the comfort there
Within, the silence barely heard?
